Class Descriptions:

Felted Wool Landscape

Each participant will make a felted wool landscape “painting” of their choice (or flowers, or anything you wish) with fine, soft Merino Wool and silk. You will learn ways to make different trees, flowers, sunsets, moons, etc…  We will be painting with fibre (not paint!) and you will learn both needle felting and wet felting.  You will then be shown how to mount your artwork onto a deep gallery canvas to display at home. This workshop is suitable for beginners or experienced felters as your piece can be as intricate or as simple as you like.

Felted Butterfly/Moth Workshop

Each participant will make a detailed 12″ x 12″ felted wool “painting” of their choice of a Butterfly/Moth using fine, soft Merino Wool and silk, Focus in this class will be on needle felting details, use of colour, and following a picture/design. We will be painting with fibre (not paint!) and you will learn both needle felting and wet felting. You will then be shown how to mount your artwork onto a deep gallery canvas to display at home. This workshop is suitable for beginners or experienced felters as your butterfly can be as intricate or as simple as you like.

Needle Felted Teddy Bear

Come learn the wonderful art of needle felting and create your own cute little felted bear with nothing more than wool and felting needles (and lots and lots of stabbing!) This is a versatile form of soft sculpture that can be used to make so many things. This workshop is suitable for beginners or those with some experience. Participants will receive a Felting kit (felting foam and felting needles), and enough core wool, merino wool, and glass eyes to make two 3″ teddy bears.

Felted Riot of Daisies/Flowers Workshop

Each participant will make a large felted wool ’Painting’, of a “Riot of Daisies” (or other flowers if you wish) with lots of detail. Using different “painting with wool” techniques, you will be shown how to choose your own colour scheme, design your background using merino wool, and lots of silk, and then create your own flower collage. You will then be shown various ways to mount or use your work of art when you take it home. This workshop is suitable for beginners or experienced felters as your wool painting can be as intricate or as simple as you like. We will be learning both needle felting and wet felting.

Needle Felting: The process of interlocking wool fibres by stabbing it repeatedly with a barbed needle. The barbs catch the scales on the fibre and cause them to tangle and bind together.

Wet Felting: uses water, soap and agitation ( either rubbing or rolling) to interlock and compact wool fibres together.

If you have any questions please email me (Lois) at tuckamoor@hotmail.com.

Anyone can felt!

If you have the dexterity to write or type then you can needle felt! The wet felting part of the workshop requires some elbow grease, but if you have limitations, there is always someone (me!) who can roll your project for you. Felting is a wonderful, beautiful, and useful hobby. The possibilities are limitless and the materials are inexpensive. This is my favorite workshop to teach because the participants are always so pleased with the results. Once you learn the basics of wet felting and needle (or dry) felting there are so many things you can make and do.

Supplies Included

  • Felting Needles
  • Lots of dyed merino wool top, prefelt and batting, dyed silk, glitter, wool, curls and other embellishments to choose from to complete your project.
  • During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to purchase additional supplies to take home for other projects if you wish.
  • Use of Wet felting supplies and other tools. (Bubblewrap, rollers, soap, spray bottles, etc)
  • Felting soap
  • Lots of pictures for inspiration and patterns if needed.

Supplies to bring from home

This list will be confirmed by email to each participant before the workshop. It may be different depending on the workshop. (For the Needle Felted Teddy Bear Workshop you will only need to bring a pair of scissors)

  • 2-3 large Bath Towels, any colour. (Required)
  • cushion foam 18″ x 18″ and at least 2″ thick (you can get this at Walmart or Fabricville) (Required)
  • an empty clean 1L plastic juice or milk jug with lid
  • A 2-3 foot length of pool noodle or 2″ wide ABS pipe. (Optional)
  • 2 pieces of small-bubble bubble wrap at least 20″ x 20″ or one big piece. Must be at least 20″ wide. This is actually hard to find in this width.  The instructor will have bubblewrap that you can use or buy if you wish some to take home.
  • Small sharp scissors.(Required)
  • A clover pink felting Pen for 1-3 needles.  This is optional but recommended by the instructor. You can purchase this at Micheals or many places online for around $20. The instructor will have a limited number of felting pens for students try out and/or purchase.  Please inform the instructor if you would like to purchase one during the workshop.  You can participate in this workshop perfectly without this tool, but they do make the needles easier to hold.
  • a picture or two that you might want to felt. if you have pictures on an Ipad, that can work as well. (Optional).
  • for the Butterfly/Moth workshop, you will receive information on which butterflies you can/should choose from. You should decide before your workshop to ensure that all the materials, patterns you require are available.
  • If you have ever felted or made any kind of art/craft, feel free to bring your work with you for show and tell.
  • Lunch, water, etc. — We will break for lunch from 12 noon – 1 pm.  You are welcome to bring a lunch or go home for lunch if you live nearby. There are also some places to eat within walking or driving distance. I will be having my lunch at the centre, so that I can answer questions, help out any participants, or just chat.
